With the July 31 MLB trade deadline approaching, the Detroit Tigers may consider moving a few key players from their 40-man roster to strengthen their roster for a postseason run. Currently leading the AL Central and holding the best record in the league, the Tigers are in a strong position but still have needs particularly a starting pitcher, bullpen depth, and a long-term solution at third base.
Here are five players who could be dealt to improve the team down the stretch:
1. Keider Montero Pitcher
Montero has performed well when called upon and holds a 9–7 record over two seasons. While he’s currently a fifth starter in Detroit’s rotation, he might be a mid-rotation arm elsewhere. He could be used as trade bait to help upgrade the batting lineup especially at third base.
2. Andy Ibáñez Infielder
Despite struggling offensively this season, Ibáñez brings veteran experience and versatility. His value as a utility player could make him a useful piece in a multi-player trade, particularly to help fortify the bullpen or lineup depth.
3. Trey Sweeney Infielder
Sweeney, acquired in last year’s Jack Flaherty deal, has had a rocky first full MLB season and was recently sent to Triple-A Toledo. While Detroit isn’t giving up on him, his long-term potential could boost his trade value, especially since the Tigers have young talent coming up at his position.
4. Zach McKinstry Infielder
With a crowded infield, McKinstry might be the odd man out especially if Detroit targets a more powerful bat. He’s a reliable utility option but lacks significant power, making him expendable in a trade to clear roster space.
5. Sawyer Gipson-Long Pitcher
Though the Tigers shouldn’t be eager to trade pitching, Gipson-Long could be a valuable add-on in a larger package. He offers versatility as a starter or reliever and owns a strong strikeout-to-walk ratio, making him an attractive secondary piece in a big deal.
As Detroit pushes toward October, moves like these could be key to solidifying their roster for a deep playoff run.
