Wrexham University Launches New Football and Community Development Degree in Partnership with Wrexham AFC

A new and unique academic programme focused on the social impact of football is set to launch this September in Wrexham.

Wrexham University, in collaboration with the Wrexham AFC Foundation, has introduced a Football and Community Development foundation degree. The course is designed to explore how football can influence and uplift communities, particularly by empowering children and young people.

Students will gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, including practical coaching opportunities and work placements with the Wrexham AFC Foundation. Upon completion, graduates will be equipped to coach young players or lead community-based sports initiatives.

Sara Hilton, senior lecturer in football and coaching science at Wrexham University, expressed her excitement:

“We’re thrilled to unveil this new degree, especially in partnership with the purpose-driven Wrexham AFC Foundation. Football has the power to bring about real change in communities, and we’re proud to be shaping the next generation of grassroots coaches and outreach professionals.”

Dr Leigh Griffin, chair of the university’s board of governors, highlighted the significance of the collaboration:

“This programme is a perfect example of our strong ties with Wrexham AFC. The club’s impressive transformation has helped uplift our community, and this degree will prepare students to extend that positive impact even further.”

The initiative is not just academic but also deeply practical. Students will benefit from real-world experiences both locally and internationally, giving them the skills and confidence to drive meaningful change through football.

Jamie Edwards, head of community at Wrexham AFC Foundation, called the programme a “gamechanger”:

“Football clubs like ours have both the opportunity and the responsibility to lead social transformation. This degree equips students with the tools and experiences to do just that – using football as a force for good.”
