Wrexham have made their first move in the summer transfer market, though it’s been a slow start overall. With the transfer window open until September 1st, there’s still plenty of time for Phil Parkinson to strengthen the squad, even as fans grow eager for more early arrivals.
The club have officially kicked off their summer business with the signing of striker Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle. He joins in time for the beginning of pre-season, offering a boost as the squad returns for testing and training.
Wrexham are preparing for an exciting pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand, set to take place next month. There’s hope that at least one or two more additions can be secured before the trip, giving Parkinson the opportunity to integrate new signings early.
Meanwhile, the chances of Wrexham landing Lewis O’Brien are fading. The Nottingham Forest midfielder has been on the club’s radar, but reports now suggest he is eyeing a move to one of Wrexham’s Championship rivals.
The 26-year-old has struggled for regular football since arriving at Forest in 2022, having spent time on loan — most recently with Swansea City, where he’s hinted at a desire to return. According to Hull Live, O’Brien is now thought to favour a move to Hull City, which would place him closer to his West Yorkshire roots.
Interest in O’Brien is growing, with Valencia and other clubs also reportedly circling. As a result, Wrexham’s hopes of landing him are quickly diminishing.
Could Wrexham Afford Lewis O’Brien?
Earlier this year, Wrexham broke their transfer record by signing Sam Smith from Reading in a £2 million deal. While Parkinson is also exploring loan and free transfer options, another record-breaking fee is possible this summer.
Although some sources have quoted a £5 million fee for O’Brien, Hull Live claims that figure is likely exaggerated. Forest signed him as part of a joint £10 million deal, but with the player now surplus to requirements and out of contract next summer, a lower price tag is expected.
Wrexham may be financially capable of meeting the cost, but with heavy competition and the player appearing to prefer other destinations, the move currently seems unlikely.
