New Trade Twist Gives Reds Clear Shot at Landing Luis Robert Jr. From White Sox
The Luis Robert Jr. to Cincinnati speculation is back—and this time, it just might stick. According to a new report, the Chicago White Sox are now open to including cash in a deal to help offload Robert’s contract, a move that could be the final piece needed for the Reds to finally get their man.
The Reds came close to landing the dynamic outfielder during the offseason and again earlier this year when Robert was struggling through a rough patch at the plate. Now, thanks to reporting from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon, it’s clear the White Sox are open for business—and willing to get creative.
Robert’s six-year, $50 million deal runs through 2025, with $20 million club options in 2026 and 2027, plus a $2 million buyout. That flexibility already made him an appealing target. But with Chicago reportedly ready to offset part of his salary, the risk-reward equation becomes even more favorable for Cincinnati.
Though Robert has struggled offensively, hitting just .188 this season and .211 across his last 168 games, he still brings elite defense (86th percentile in outfield range) and speed (22-for-27 on stolen bases). And when he’s locked in, his power is undeniable—he smashed 30 home runs during his 2023 All-Star campaign.
For a Reds team looking to make a postseason push, adding Robert could be the boost they need. Their current outfield group—featuring the likes of Rece Hinds and Will Benson—offers depth, but not the kind of top-end impact Robert could deliver if he finds his form.
Cincinnati has shown it’s willing to move boldly, as seen with the pending promotion of top pitching prospect Chase Burns. With the White Sox all but holding up a “for sale” sign, it’s time for the Reds to finish what they started—and bring Luis Robert Jr. to Great American Ball Park.
