Premier League Title-Winning Goalkeeper Open to Wrexham Move Ahead of Championship Return
A veteran goalkeeper with Premier League credentials has expressed interest in joining Wrexham as the Welsh club prepares for life in the Championship.
The player, who has had spells at Portsmouth, Stoke City, Bournemouth, and Everton, notably won the Premier League with Chelsea during the 2016–17 season. Over his career, he amassed 256 top-flight appearances and registered 63 clean sheets.
Asmir Begovic, the goalkeeper in question, joined Chelsea in 2015 as a backup to Thibaut Courtois following Petr Cech’s departure. He played twice under Antonio Conte during the club’s title-winning campaign the last time Chelsea won the Premier League.
Now a free agent after leaving Everton, Begovic is considering new opportunities and Wrexham is firmly on his radar. Speaking to Fruity King, he shared his admiration for the club:
“Wrexham is a really fascinating project both in terms of football and everything around it. I enjoy working with great people, and from what I’ve seen in the documentary, the owners seem fantastic. That’s the kind of club I’d love to be part of, and the idea of Wrexham definitely interests me.
If it makes sense for everyone involved, who knows? It’s an exciting project.”
Wrexham’s remarkable climb up the English football pyramid has been headline-making. Since being acquired by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in a 2021 deal, the club has achieved back-to-back promotions first from the National League, then from League Two.
Now, after a stunning rise, Wrexham stands just one tier below the Premier League, making history as the first English club to earn consecutive promotions from League Two and League One in the modern era.
