‘Smoke Was Everywhere’: Wrexham’s James McClean Recounts Frightening Car Crash Escape
Wrexham captain James McClean has opened up about a terrifying car accident he was involved in earlier this year revealing just how close he came to serious injury after crashing into a roundabout on a foggy morning.
The incident, which occurred in January, was confirmed by the club at the time, but details remained limited. Now, in the latest season of Welcome to Wrexham, McClean has shared exactly what happened and how lucky he feels to have walked away unscathed.
“It Just Wasn’t My Time”
“It was a really foggy morning, and visibility was terrible,” McClean explained. “I thought I had more road ahead of me. I pulled out from behind a lorry, and suddenly the roundabout was just there.”
The next moments were a blur.
“The car hit, came to a stop, and there was smoke everywhere,” he recalled. “The door was jammed I had to bang it open to get out. Looking back, I just think I was saved that day. It wasn’t my time.”
Despite the ordeal, McClean showed incredible resilience. He not only made it to training the same day, but also started in Wrexham’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham the following match.
Looking Ahead: Captain’s Focus on Championship Challenge
Now fully recovered and reflecting on the experience with gratitude, McClean is turning his attention to what’s next. The 34-year-old is expected to play a key role in Wrexham’s upcoming campaign in the Championship, as the club looks to continue its remarkable rise following three straight promotions.
His story is a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change — and why the moments on and off the pitch matter so much.
