Tottenham Poised for Cash Boost Amid Son Heung-min Contract Detail
Son Heung-min’s future at Tottenham Hotspur continues to spark debate this summer, as speculation mounts over a potential move abroad.
The 32-year-old forward, who now has just a year left on his Spurs deal, has been linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia and a possible reunion with Jose Mourinho. Fresh off finally winning silverware with the club, Son is reportedly more open than ever to exploring a new challenge.
However, a recent contractual clause may complicate any immediate transfer. According to The Times, Son is obligated to feature in Tottenham’s preseason match in South Korea against Newcastle United on August 3 as part of the Coupang Play Series. That game, set to take place at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, is a key component of Spurs’ commercial tour of Asia.
New head coach Thomas Frank, in his first interviews, emphasized balancing youth development with making the most of senior players like Son. Although chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly open to selling the South Korean star, any move is likely to wait until after the lucrative pre-season clash.
Former Spurs scout Bryan King told Tottenham News that the club could pocket over £1 million from that single match thanks to Son’s massive draw in his home country.
“There’s been a lot of talk around Son, but he hasn’t publicly said he wants out,” King explained.
“If he’s contractually required to appear in the Asia tour, that must be fulfilled. Fans will show up in droves just to see him. That match will bring in serious revenue for Spurs.”
Given Son’s global brand and marketing power, his situation is more complex than most. Levy will weigh up commercial benefits as much as on-pitch contributions when considering his captain’s future.
Ultimately, though, Thomas Frank’s view could prove decisive. If the Dane sees Son as integral to his squad either for leadership or attacking quality then that may keep the veteran in North London a while longer.
