Since Eddie Howe took charge over three years ago, Newcastle United have made steady progress, culminating in a successful past season that delivered silverware and a return to Champions League football. And while that upward trajectory continues, the club is pushing to improve its attacking options even further.

Joao Pedro in Sight, but Jota May Be Better Fit
Newcastle have long admired Brighton’s Joao Pedro and view him as an ideal partner for Alexander Isak. After missing out on other targets like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the Magpies see Pedro as a key addition. With 30 goals and 10 assists in 70 games for Brighton, he offers versatility and attacking threat. However, 16 of his goals have come from penalties, which may complicate his fit alongside Isak, Newcastle’s current penalty taker.

With Chelsea also interested, competition for Pedro is stiff. But Newcastle may pivot to an arguably even more effective option.

Newcastle Approach Liverpool for Diogo Jota
According to journalist Matt Thielen, Newcastle are one of several Premier League clubs to contact Liverpool about signing Diogo Jota. Spurs and Wolves have also shown interest, but Newcastle’s pursuit reportedly started months ago. Liverpool could consider selling for around £43 million.

The Magpies are unlikely to sign both Jota and Pedro, but if Pedro proves unattainable, Jota could be the better fit offering Premier League and Champions League experience, plus a sharper edge in front of goal.

Jota Brings Experience, Finishing Ability, and Versatility
Though injuries have hampered him, Jota has 65 goals and 26 assists in 185 appearances for Liverpool. At 28, he could provide immediate impact without needing to displace Isak as the starting striker. His ability to play across the front line adds further depth.

Last season, he managed six goals and four assists in limited minutes due to fitness issues. But his technical skills remain elite. Stats show he ranks among the top forwards in Europe for progressive passes, carries, ball recoveries, and defensive contributions, indicating high work rate and tactical intelligence.

Jamie Carragher has even called him “the best finisher” Liverpool have had in the Premier League era.

A Smart Fit for Howe’s Ambitious Project
While Joao Pedro, at 23, is a more long-term prospect, Jota offers proven pedigree, Champions League composure, and instant quality. His clinical style could give Newcastle the edge they need as they aim to solidify their place among Europe’s elite.

Ultimately, Jota’s all-around offensive skill set and experience make him a prime candidate to ease the load on Isak and elevate Newcastle’s front line heading into another demanding campaign.
