The New York Rangers head into the 2025-26 season with a clear need on defense, particularly on the left side. While most attention is on high-profile targets, one under the-radar option could quietly fill that gap: veteran defenseman Joel Hanley.
Currently, the Rangers’ left side includes Carson Soucy, Urho Vaakanainen, and possibly K’Andre Miller, with Zac Jones still a restricted free agent. However, none of these players seem to be ideal partners for star defenseman Adam Fox or strong enough to anchor a pairing on their own. Calvin de Haan might have been a solution, but after falling out of favor last season, his return seems unlikely.
Enter Hanley a 34-year-old who just completed his first full season with the Calgary Flames. Known more for his defense and puck management than his offense, Hanley recorded 9 points in 53 games while logging over 18 minutes per night. His advanced stats show strong on-ice performance, with favorable metrics in goals for, shot control, and expected goals.
Over the past two seasons, Hanley allowed fewer than two goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5, demonstrating solid reliability in a limited role. His steady presence could be exactly what the Rangers need, especially at a bargain price.
Having earned under $800,000 the past two years, Hanley could likely be signed for $1–1.5 million annually. While Calgary may want to bring him back, there’s a good chance he’ll explore free agency. If so, Rangers GM Chris Drury should seriously consider making a move for the quietly effective blueliner.
