With trade season heating up earlier than usual following the blockbuster Rafael Devers deal, the Phillies are expected to be active as the deadline approaches. Though the trade deadline is still over six weeks away, speculation is already swirling around potential targets that could address Philadelphia’s key roster needs.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic suggested a bold trade idea between the Phillies and Orioles: sending young pitching prospect Mick Abel to Baltimore in exchange for closer Félix Bautista and center fielder Cedric Mullins. The move would immediately strengthen two of Philadelphia’s biggest weaknesses the bullpen and center field. Bautista, one of the game’s top closers, is under team control through 2027 and has impressed with a 3.04 ERA and 14 saves after returning from Tommy John surgery. Mullins adds elite defense and some offensive spark, despite being set to hit free agency after the season.
Abel, a former first-round pick, has bounced back in 2025 with a 2.21 ERA across both Double-A and Triple A. Trading him would be a tough call, but with a deep rotation and top prospect Andrew Painter on the verge of joining the majors, the Phillies could be willing to make such a move in pursuit of a title run.
Elsewhere, MLB.com has linked the Phillies to other bullpen arms, including Rockies reliever Jake Bird and Nationals veteran Kyle Finnegan. Both are under team control and could bolster Philadelphia’s relief corps.
Another intriguing possibility is White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr., who remains a popular trade candidate despite struggling at the plate this year with a .194 average and .590 OPS. However, his speed, strong defense, and past offensive production still make him a potential upgrade in center field. With club options for 2026 and 2027, Robert could also be a longer-term fit if he regains his form.
While Robert’s inconsistency at the plate may raise questions, his defensive ability and upside might be worth the risk for a Phillies team looking to make a serious postseason push.
