The blockbuster trade sending Rafael Devers to the Giants has shaken up the baseball world and it has several implications for the Braves.

Before Boston finalized the deal with San Francisco, Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos reportedly checked in with the Red Sox about a potential trade, according to Sean McAdam. That may surprise Atlanta fans, given that Devers is signed through 2033 on a contract worth over $250 million. While the Braves aren’t exactly strapped for cash, that’s a massive commitment for a player who would primarily serve as a designated hitter in Atlanta. After all, third base and first base are already locked down long term by Austin Riley and Matt Olson.

It’s likely that Anthopoulos was simply doing his due diligence  when a bat as elite as Devers becomes available, it makes sense to at least explore the possibility. The Braves’ offense has struggled for over a season, and Devers, with an OPS+ 52% above league average, would’ve provided a huge boost.

But beyond the missed opportunity, the trade has another impact on Atlanta. Devers now strengthens the Giants — one of the teams the Braves are chasing in the National League Wild Card race. The latest standings show:

MLB: APR 29 Red Sox at Blue Jays

  • Philadelphia Phillies (+2.5 games)
  • San Francisco Giants (+1.0 game)
  • San Diego Padres
  • Milwaukee Brewers (1.5 games back)
  • Cincinnati Reds (3.0 games back)
  • St. Louis Cardinals (3.0 games back)
  • Arizona Diamondbacks (3.5 games back)
  • Atlanta Braves (8.0 games back)

The Braves sit eight games out of the final Wild Card spot and nine behind the Giants, who just significantly upgraded their lineup. There’s still time left in the season, but Atlanta needs to start gaining ground soon.
