Ravens Encouraged to Add Former 2nd-Round Pass Rusher
Strengthening the edge remains a priority for the Baltimore Ravens, and fortunately, there’s a proven veteran still on the market in the 2025 NFL free agency. Former top-40 draft pick and 10-year NFL veteran Preston Smith could be an ideal fit in coordinator Zach Orr’s defensive scheme.
Smith’s resume includes 70.5 sacks over 10 seasons, highlighting his ability to contribute immediately. Having played for Washington, the Green Bay Packers, and most recently the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith was named by Fox Sports’ Carmen Vitali as a smart addition to address Baltimore’s remaining defensive need.
Vitali pointed out that while players like Kyle Van Noy and Odafe Oweh are solid options, the Ravens could benefit from a deeper rotation to sustain pressure off the edge especially to take advantage of their talented interior line, including Justin Madubuike and Travis Jones.
Smith’s experience and production make him a logical target. Though now 32, he continues to perform at a high level, showing he still has the physical tools and savvy to disrupt quarterbacks. Last season, Smith showcased his versatility able to line up outside or even slide inside on occasion to create pressure. He’s reached eight or more sacks in a season six times and has tallied 20 or more QB pressures in five seasons.
However, signing Smith might conflict with the Ravens’ effort to get younger at edge rusher. General manager Eric DeCosta has already started that reset, drafting college sack leader Mike Green in the second round and looking to develop him alongside rising players already on the roster. With Van Noy and Oweh anchoring the current group, and young talent waiting in the wings, it may not make sense to commit cap space to another veteran unless DeCosta prioritizes proven experience over potential upside.
