An updated mock draft from MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo suggests the Atlanta Braves could select North Carolina catcher Luke Stevenson with the 22nd overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. This marks a shift from earlier projections that had the Braves targeting a shortstop in the first round.

The choice of Stevenson is intriguing, considering the Braves already have two catchers in place for the future Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy. However, in baseball, teams often prioritize overall talent over positional needs, and Stevenson is considered one of the top college catchers in the nation. Coming off a strong season with the Tar Heels, Stevenson posted a .251 batting average with 19 home runs and 58 RBIs. His left-handed power and strong defensive tools, including a 60-grade arm and solid pop times, make him a high-upside pick.

Luke Stevenson is one of the best college catchers in the country and would be a great choice for the Braves.

Despite some struggles with offspeed pitches, Stevenson shows plate discipline and potential to improve with development. Still, it would be somewhat surprising for Atlanta to bypass shortstop prospects like Marek Houston and Wehiwa Aloy, given the organization’s lack of depth at the position.

There’s also a strong chance the Braves could stick with their trend of drafting pitching early. Mayo also highlighted options such as prep arm Kruz Schoolcraft and several college pitchers, including JB Middleton, Riley Quick, Zach Root, and Gage Wood.

If the Braves do go with a position player in the first round, it would be their first since 2019. Whether they address their need at shortstop or opt for the best player available like Stevenson, Atlanta has several strong options in this year’s draft.
