The Chicago Cubs extended their winning streak to five games on Tuesday night with a thrilling 4-3 walk-off win over the Colorado Rockies in 11 innings at Wrigley Field. Rookie Matt Shaw played the hero, delivering a game-ending bloop single that sent fans into celebration and pushed the Cubs’ record to 31-24, strengthening their lead in the NL Central.

Shaw, one of Chicago’s top young prospects, came up clutch with two outs after Michael Busch tied the game with a key RBI single. With runners in scoring position and the game on the line, Shaw’s soft hit to right field sealed the win.

MLB’s official X (formerly Twitter) account highlighted the dramatic finish, posting:
“The rookie gets it done 😤 Matt Shaw walks it off for the @Cubs!”

The game was a back-and-forth battle. The Rockies briefly pulled ahead in the top of the 11th on a Brenton Doyle groundout. But the Cubs responded with resilience  Pete Crow-Armstrong began the bottom of the inning as the automatic runner at second, stole third, and scored on Busch’s single. A walk and pinch-runner set the stage for Shaw’s big moment.

The win highlighted the Cubs’ depth and emerging young talent. Shaw, drafted 13th overall in 2023, has started to make his mark in the majors. Though his walk-off was just his 21st hit of the season, it was easily his most impactful yet.

With an 8-2 record over their last 10 games, the Cubs are surging, boosted by a mix of youthful energy and solid veteran play as they head into the weekend with serious momentum.
