Tigers Emerge as Fascinating Contenders Ahead of Trade Deadline

As the MLB Trade Deadline on July 31 approaches, the Detroit Tigers are poised to be active buyers, signaling a dramatic shift from past years when the team was deep in rebuilding mode. Now firmly in the playoff race, they’re looking to strengthen their position in the American League.

CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson acknowledged a change of heart about Detroit’s chances. “I’ll admit, I underestimated the Tigers,” he said. “After what I saw as a passive offseason, I didn’t expect them to contend. But they’re heading into trade season from a position of strength.”

Smart Moves and Strong Development

Led by manager A.J. Hinch and President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris, Detroit has transformed into a serious competitor. Once lacking offensive firepower, the Tigers now average 5.38 runs per game fourth-best in the majors. Spencer Torkelson has become a power threat, and Javier Báez’s successful shift to center field has added both offensive and defensive value.

Their front office has made several key moves in 2025:

  • Feb. 12 – Traded Mason Englert to the Rays for prospect Drew Sommers
  • Mar. 13 – Acquired Bailey Horn from the Cardinals
  • Mar. 28 – Traded for Brewer Hicklen from the Brewers, later calling him up on April 8

These acquisitions reflect a blend of immediate upgrades and future planning.

Detroit’s pitching has also been elite, with the best team ERA in MLB since the start of 2024. Tarik Skubal is leading the way, drawing Cy Young buzz, while creative bullpen usage from Hinch has further bolstered the staff.

Trade Deadline Focus: Third Base and More

As the deadline nears, Detroit is eyeing reinforcements especially at third base. The position has been a weak link due to injuries and inexperience. Matt Vierling, an outfielder-turned-infielder, is currently sidelined, and while Jace Jung has promise, he’s still developing.

This has prompted trade rumors involving big names like Nolan Arenado of the Cardinals a veteran All-Star with elite defense and even Bo Bichette of the Blue Jays, who could switch from shortstop to third to provide offensive firepower.

In addition to third base, the Tigers are also exploring bullpen upgrades. Despite solid performances from Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest, others like Tyler Holton and Beau Brieske have been inconsistent. A high-leverage reliever could prove essential in close games.

The team is also considering improvements at catcher, aiming for more reliable offense behind the plate.

“The Tigers might just be the most compelling buyer heading into the deadline,” Anderson concluded.
