Apr 5, 2025 –Inglewood, CA Dallas Mavericks forward Anthony Davis stood solemnly during the national anthem ahead of the team’s matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers at Intuit Dome.

As the Mavericks navigate the offseason, they’re in search of a reliable point guard to fill in while Kyrie Irving recovers from an ACL injury, which could keep him sidelined until early 2026. Currently, Dallas only has Brandon Williams and Jaden Hardy under contract at the guard position, highlighting the urgent need for depth.

NBA insider Marc Stein previously linked Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday to the Mavs, although his hefty $104 million contract over the next three seasons could complicate trade talks. However, Stein also named another potential and more financially feasible option with ties to Anthony Davis  Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball.

Ball was initially flagged as a name to watch, but Stein now reports that Dallas is expected to seriously explore trade possibilities for him. Ball recently signed a two-year, $20 million deal with a team option on the second year, making him a much more attainable asset. The Mavericks could package Jaden Hardy and Dwight Powell to match Ball’s $10 million salary for the 2025-26 season.

This move would represent a poetic twist: Ball was originally part of the blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis from the Lakers to the Pelicans in 2019. That deal included Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, multiple first-round picks, and more in a reshuffling that changed the landscape of the NBA.

Now, six years later, Ball could find himself reunited with Davis  but this time in Dallas.
