The Detroit Lions may part ways with defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike just months after bringing him back on a one-year, $5.5 million deal. Despite the re-signing in March, Onwuzurike faces an uphill battle to make the final roster following the team’s recent draft moves and veteran additions to the defensive line.
Pro Football Network’s Sterling Xie noted that first-round rookie Tyleik Williams, along with newcomers like D.J. Reader and Roy Lopez, could push Onwuzurike off the roster. Though once a second-round pick, Onwuzurike has struggled with injuries and underwhelming production, appearing in only 42 games since 2021.

While his 2023 season showed some improvement 10 starts, 28 tackles, and 1.5 sacks — his future with the team may depend on preseason performance. Xie suggested that unless Onwuzurike impresses in training camp, the Lions may opt to trade him for a late-round pick rather than risk losing him for nothing. Still, injuries particularly to Alim McNeill could play a role in whether Detroit keeps Onwuzurike for depth.
Rookie standout Williams is expected to play a significant role early, with team officials already praising his potential as a disruptive force in the middle of the defense.
