The Dallas Mavericks are heading into the offseason in search of a point guard, with Kyrie Irving sidelined until at least January due to ACL surgery. With only Jaden Hardy and Brandon Williams left in the backcourt, the Mavericks are thin at a crucial position for a team aiming to contend. As seen in the Thunder-Nuggets playoff series, having multiple reliable ball-handlers can be a game-changer.

However, Dallas faces financial constraints. Midseason trades that brought in Caleb Martin and Max Christie added $16 million to their salary commitments, and Hardy’s extension tacked on another $6 million. As a result, any impactful acquisition will likely need to come through a trade.

Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics are also navigating a challenging offseason. Without any roster changes, their payroll would be the highest in NBA history bringing severe luxury tax penalties. With Jayson Tatum sidelined due to an Achilles tear suffered during the playoffs, Boston’s title hopes for next season are dim.

CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn suggests a bold move: Boston trades Derrick White to Dallas in exchange for P.J. Washington, Caleb Martin, Dwight Powell, a 2029 first-round pick (via the Lakers), and a 2032 first-round pick. White, whose contract totals $118 million, would align with Mavericks GM Nico Harrison’s “defense wins championships” philosophy. The deal would also give Boston a chance to evaluate Sixth Man of the Year Payton Pritchard in a larger role.

Still, the proposed price tag seems steep for Dallas. Harrison has made clear he’s focused on the present, but giving up two first-round picks for White especially after trading a first for P.J. Washington just over a year ago raises questions about asset management. While White’s defense and shooting could benefit the Mavericks, it’s debatable whether this is the right move or a feasible one.
