Did Carson Soucy Do Enough to Justify Staying on the Rangers’ Roster?

Carson Soucy’s short stint with the New York Rangers left little to remember. Despite showing enthusiasm about joining the team, his on-ice performance failed to match that energy. With limited contributions and underwhelming stats, fans are questioning whether the trade for Soucy was worthwhile and whether he should remain with the team moving forward.

Expectations vs. Reality

Soucy joined the Rangers on March 6, 2025, in hopes of bolstering the defense late in the season. At 30 years old, and coming off a modest run with the Vancouver Canucks where he tallied only 3 goals and 7 assists in 59 games  expectations weren’t sky-high, but the hope was he’d provide solid depth. However, he played just 16 games with New York, contributing only 1 goal and 2 assists. His impact, both statistically and visually, was minimal, and the team ultimately missed the playoffs.

Despite waiving his no-trade clause to join New York partly motivated by relationships with players like J.T. Miller and Will Borgen from his Seattle days Soucy never seemed to click on the ice.

Rangers GM Chris Drury spoke positively at the time of the trade, noting Soucy’s versatility, physicality, and potential long-term value. The team was not viewing him as a rental but rather as a piece for the present and the future. Yet that upside hasn’t materialized  at least not yet.

Performance and Fan Perception

Soucy’s lack of chemistry and low production disappointed many fans. While some hoped his familiarity with certain players would translate into better cohesion, that never came to fruition. His one goal and two assists in a limited sample size did little to move the needle during a season where the Rangers needed help.

Talking to fans at Madison Square Garden, the general sentiment was frustration many pointed to Soucy as one of the letdowns in a season that didn’t meet expectations.

Season Grade: D

Soucy’s brief Rangers debut earned him a D grade  a reflection of unfulfilled potential. Being added so late in the season may have played a role, as he never had time to fully integrate. Still, in high-stakes environments like New York, time is rarely a luxury. The team lacked momentum down the stretch, and Soucy didn’t do much to help reverse that trend.

Looking Ahead

Soucy is still under contract for next season, but speculation is already swirling about whether he’ll be part of the roster come opening night. The Rangers may look to reset and field a stronger, more cohesive team after a disappointing year. While Soucy could improve with a full season under his belt, his current trajectory has many questioning whether he’s part of the long-term plan.

For now, his future with the Rangers is uncertain the decision lies with the front office.
