The Baltimore Orioles have parted ways with manager Brandon Hyde after a lackluster 15-28 start to the 2025 season, falling 10½ games behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees. The organization hopes a leadership change will help reverse course for what has been one of MLB’s most disappointing teams.

Hyde, who guided the Orioles through a rebuild and into playoff contention in recent years, has been replaced on an interim basis by third-base coach Tony Mansolino. Field coordinator Tim Cossins was also let go.

Orioles GM Mike Elias acknowledged the team’s struggles, saying, “The poor start is ultimately my responsibility,” and praised Hyde for his contributions, including a division title and back-to-back postseason appearances.

The team has faltered across the board in 2025, with a struggling offense, a depleted pitching staff, and subpar defense. Injuries to key players, including pitchers Grayson Rodriguez and Zach Eflin, along with a failure to adequately replace ace Corbin Burnes, have contributed to the team’s league-worst 5.33 ERA.

Baltimore also hasn’t seen expected returns from its offseason spending spree. Big-ticket signings like Tyler O’Neill, Charlie Morton, and Gary Sanchez have underperformed or been sidelined by injuries. Only pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano has met expectations.

Players were informed of Hyde’s firing during a meeting Saturday, just hours before a game against the Nationals. Reaction from players ranged from surprise to regret, with several noting the need for better performance on the field.

Despite optimism fueled by past success and a promising young core, including Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman, the Orioles have failed to meet expectations this season. Rookie manager Tony Mansolino will now try to steer the team back on track.

Hyde had been with the team since 2019, helping guide it from the depths of a rebuild to a 101-win season in 2023. But a first-round playoff exit in 2024 and a sluggish start this year prompted the organization to move in a new direction.

Owner David Rubenstein said the decision reflects the need for change, adding, “We believe this is one of those moments.”
