Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Tyler Smith recently hired a new agent, but contrary to a swirling rumor, that doesn’t mean he’s looking to leave the team.
Being in the spotlight comes with the territory for Cowboys stars, who are often the subject of exaggerated media speculation. Some fans and outlets, eager for a splashy move, mistakenly assume Dallas is vulnerable to losing top talent—a notion that’s both tired and unfounded.
A recent example of this comes from a piece by Last Word On Sports, which suggested Smith might seek a trade or push for a contract extension now that he’s signed with Athletes First, a prominent agency known for representing Cowboys players.
The article claims that with ongoing negotiations involving Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons, Smith could be left behind. However, that speculation ignores the reality: the Cowboys fully recognize Smith’s value.
In fact, the team recently exercised his fifth-year option with ease—a sign they’re committed to him long-term. A team insider described the decision as “one of our easiest ever.”
Smith has become one of the NFL’s top offensive guards since being drafted in the first round, earning both Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. Following in the footsteps of Zack Martin, who mentored him early in his career, Smith is viewed as the next foundational piece of the Cowboys’ offensive line.
While he may not receive a contract extension immediately, there’s no reason to believe Dallas won’t prioritize him in due time. The idea of trading him is especially far-fetched given his performance, leadership, and potential.
With salary cap challenges ahead, the Cowboys will have to manage their resources carefully. But trading a young, elite lineman like Smith isn’t part of their plan. He’s a cornerstone of the team’s future, and they know it.
So while rumors may fly, Dallas isn’t entertaining anything other than keeping Tyler Smith right where he is.
