Brian Snitker repeated a questionable decision on Friday night that nearly cost the Braves in a tight game against the Red Sox. Fans were treated to a classic pitcher’s duel between Garrett Crochet and Chris Sale, but early home runs and a late collapse by Boston’s bullpen helped Atlanta edge out a win, improving to 23-22 on the season.
The Braves had a golden opportunity to break the game open in the sixth inning with the bases loaded against Crochet. It was a prime moment for Snitker to make a strategic move — but he stuck with Stuart Fairchild at the plate, passing on the chance to pinch-hit with Drake Baldwin.
That choice was questionable. Despite being left-handed, Baldwin has thrived against left-handed pitchers in May, going 4-for-5. Braves insider Mark Bowman noted Baldwin would have been the smarter play in that high-leverage spot.
Snitker made the same call again in the ninth inning — keeping Fairchild in with the bases loaded and two outs. This time, Fairchild managed to draw a walk, helping Atlanta tack on two more runs. Still, the decision raised eyebrows.
While Snitker has generally done a good job giving Baldwin opportunities, this seemed like an ideal moment to use him. Baldwin has excelled in clutch situations this year, hitting .364 with runners in scoring position and two outs, along with a strong OPS+ of 195.
In the end, the Braves held on as Raisel Iglesias secured the save and Fairchild recorded the final out, but Snitker’s reluctance to go to Baldwin in those critical spots left many wondering what could have been.
