The Boston Red Sox endured a tough loss on Tuesday night, falling 10-9 in 11 innings to the Detroit Tigers after their bullpen faltered. Despite entering the bottom of the 11th with a 9-7 lead, Boston saw their hopes dashed when Javier Baez hit a three-run walk-off homer off reliever Greg Weissert.

The Red Sox have now dropped the first two games of the series in contrasting fashion, bringing their record back to an even 22-22. They currently sit second in the AL East, trailing the Yankees by three games.

As Boston battles through a challenging Midwest road trip, it’s worth checking in on some former players—particularly one who’s shining in the minors.

Christian Arroyo Making Noise in Triple-A

Christian Arroyo, 29, who has been with six MLB organizations, is now heating up in Triple-A with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Phillies’ top affiliate. Once a versatile contributor for the Red Sox, Arroyo had notable seasons in Boston between 2020 and 2023. His most productive year came in 2022 when he hit .286 with six home runs and 36 RBIs over 87 games.

After being designated for assignment by Boston and not claimed by any team, Arroyo signed a minor league deal with the Brewers in early 2024. However, he struggled in their farm system and was later picked up by the Phillies in February.

Now with Lehigh Valley, Arroyo is red-hot. In just 15 games, he’s posted a strong .328/.400/.569 slash line with 3 home runs and 14 RBIs. Though he’s not on the Phillies’ 40-man roster, he could become a serious option if injuries strike their infield, which features stars like Bryce Harper and Trea Turner.

Arroyo missed a stretch from April 9–29 due to injury but returned in time to face his former team’s Triple-A squad, the Worcester Red Sox, in a recent series.

With experience at every infield position plus right field, Arroyo’s versatility and hot bat make him a top candidate for a big-league call-up. If he continues to perform, Red Sox fans may see him back in the majors soon—possibly during Boston’s visit to Philadelphia from July 21-23.
