Detroit Tigers pitcher Casey Mize, enjoying a strong comeback season, was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 10 (retroactive to May 9) due to a mild left hamstring strain—the same muscle that sidelined him for two months last year.

However, Mize emphasized that this time it’s not a serious issue. In fact, if it were later in the season, he believes he’d still be pitching.

“I felt a slight tweak during the game,” Mize told the Detroit Free Press. “But it’s early in the season, so we’re just being cautious. If this was September, we probably wouldn’t even be discussing it.”

Injury Status and Recovery

Mize’s hamstring issue didn’t impact his May 8 start much—he still pitched six strong innings, allowing only one run on three hits, with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Describing the injury as “very mild,” Mize said he hasn’t altered his routine drastically. He’s still throwing and maintaining most of his prep work, with some added rehab.

“I haven’t shut down my arm,” he said. “That’s a really good sign.”

He even threw a bullpen session on May 13, and there’s a possibility he’ll return without needing a minor league rehab start. The Tigers are eyeing a potential return by May 24.

Promising Season Interrupted

The injury comes during what’s been an impressive resurgence for Mize in 2025. After missing all of 2023 and most of 2024, he has posted a 2.53 ERA across seven starts, with 35 strikeouts and just nine walks over 42.2 innings.

While the IL stint is disappointing, both Mize and manager A.J. Hinch agree it’s more of a precaution than a concern.

Bottom Line

Although the hamstring strain puts a brief pause on his season, Mize is optimistic and on track for a swift return. With no signs of a major setback, his comeback campaign remains firmly on course—and perhaps headed toward something special.
