It had been nearly a full year since Ronald Acuña Jr. last played in a game, but in his first rehab appearance with the FCL Braves, he wasted no time reminding fans of what he’s capable of.
In just his third at-bat, Acuña launched a home run a powerful statement in his first game action since suffering his second ACL tear. Though it came in a Florida Coast League game a lower-level minor league setting the swing was a thrilling sign of progress for Braves fans eager for his return.
Even more encouraging, Acuña ripped a hard-hit line drive in his previous at-bat, showing signs of sharp timing and confidence at the plate. For most players, shaking off rust after a long layoff takes time. But Acuña’s quick impact is yet another reminder of his elite talent.
His return could be a game-changer for Atlanta. The Braves’ pitching has held its own this season, but the offense has struggled, ranking just 21st in runs scored. Atlanta’s outfield production, in particular, has been underwhelming. Any version of Acuña would provide a lift but the MVP version could transform this team into a legitimate World Series threat.
While he’s not expected back in the majors until late May at the earliest, Acuña’s early success in rehab is a huge reason for optimism. If he keeps progressing, the Braves could be getting back one of the most dynamic players in baseball just in time to turn their season around.
