After winning the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, forward Isaac Howard has reportedly decided not to sign with the Tampa Bay Lightning, who drafted him in the first round in 2022. That decision opens the door for potential suitors and the New York Rangers should be at the front of the line.
While NHL teams invest significant time and resources into evaluating prospects, the players themselves often have little say in where they begin their careers. From the moment they’re drafted, pressure and expectations are heaped upon them, and their future is largely out of their control. While some may argue these athletes are fortunate just to be in this position, the reality is more nuanced.
In rare cases, prospects can navigate their way into free agency and choose their destination — a move that often draws criticism from fans and media. Recent examples include Cutter Gauthier with the Flyers and Rutger McGroarty with the Jets, both of whom were heavily scrutinized for their decisions.
But before anyone calls these players entitled, it’s worth noting that the Rangers have profited from similar situations. Kevin Hayes, drafted by the Blackhawks, went unsigned and chose New York. Jimmy Vesey followed a similar path. And perhaps the most impactful case was Adam Fox, whose rights were traded twice before he landed with the Rangers fulfilling his childhood dream and becoming a franchise cornerstone.
Now, with Isaac Howard seemingly heading for free agency, the Rangers could once again capitalize. Howard, a skilled and dynamic winger, would be a major addition for any NHL roster, and if history is any indication, New York might just be the perfect fit.
