As massive contracts become increasingly common across MLB, Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber may be next in line for a nine-figure payday. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Schwarber has the qualities—both on and off the field—to justify a contract exceeding $100 million, with a projected annual salary of at least $25 million.
Passan highlighted Schwarber’s unique value, saying, “A designated hitter approaching age 33 landing a nine-figure deal might seem unlikely, but Schwarber is an outlier in many ways. He’s incredibly productive, a respected clubhouse leader, and well worth $25 million per year. A four-year contract ask in a weak market for elite hitters is completely reasonable.”
Schwarber Wants to Stay in Philly
Currently in the final year of a four-year, $79 million deal, Schwarber is set to earn $20 million in 2025. He’s made it clear he wants to remain in Philadelphia and expressed hope earlier this year that a new contract would be worked out soon.
“We’ll see,” Schwarber told MLB.com. “There’s interest on our side, and if the team wants to talk, we’re open.”
He emphasized that winning is the best path to securing a new deal, quoting former teammate Jon Lester: “The best way to get paid is to win.”
Phillies Must Decide on Veteran Core
The Phillies, who fell to the Mets in the 2024 NLDS, are looking to take the next step this season. Schwarber believes the team has what it takes and praised both the offseason additions and the continuity of the roster.
“We’ve had the same core now for three or four years,” Schwarber said. “There are no surprises—everyone knows our lineup and our pitchers. It’s just on us to finish the job.”
If the Phillies don’t lock Schwarber up during the season, he’s expected to be one of the most highly pursued free agents this offseason.
