The Baltimore Orioles are off to a disappointing start in the 2025 MLB season, with injuries and avoidable front office missteps both contributing to their poor performance. While much attention has been paid to the team’s failure to strengthen the starting rotation, smaller personnel decisions—like parting ways with pitcher Scott Blewett—are also proving costly.

Blewett was claimed off waivers by the Orioles in mid-April and impressed during his brief stint, logging 4.1 scoreless innings and striking out six. Despite that success, the Orioles designated him for assignment and subsequently dealt him to the Atlanta Braves. Since the trade, Blewett has become a key asset in the Braves’ bullpen.

Although he gave up five runs across his first 8.1 innings for Atlanta, three came in a single outing. He has otherwise performed effectively, most notably delivering four scoreless innings across two extra-inning appearances in a recent series against the Pirates. His clutch relief work helped seal a win on Saturday, showcasing his value in high-pressure situations.

With Baltimore’s bullpen struggling to a 5.29 ERA—third-worst in the majors—the decision to move on from Blewett appears increasingly questionable. While he may not be a superstar, he’s clearly a capable reliever who could have helped the Orioles. Instead, the Braves are reaping the benefits of a move Baltimore might already regret.

Would you like a visual comparison of Blewett’s stats with Orioles and Braves to illustrate the contrast?
