Matthew Stafford Chooses Loyalty Over Bigger Payday, Re-Ups with Rams
Matthew Stafford is staying put in Los Angeles, despite having opportunities elsewhere that could’ve paid him significantly more. The Rams quarterback, who led the team to a Super Bowl win in 2022, agreed to a new two-year deal worth $80 million—$84 million including a roster bonus—despite having just $4 million guaranteed for 2025 and nothing locked in for 2026 prior to the new contract.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Stafford turned down more lucrative offers—reportedly around $100 million over two years—from both the Giants and Raiders. But instead of joining two rebuilding teams, the 37-year-old chose stability and a chance at another deep playoff run with a Rams team that won the NFC West and made the postseason in 2024.
The new contract structure will pay Stafford a $16 million base salary and $24 million in roster bonuses each season through 2026.
Rams head coach Sean McVay emphasized that there was never any tension from the team’s side during the negotiation process. Speaking on the “Fitz & Whit” podcast, McVay stated that the Rams are fully committed to Stafford and focused on supporting him moving forward, both on the field and financially.
