The Toronto Blue Jays are making waves this offseason, and their latest move is no exception. Shortly after Max Scherzer finalized his free agency decision, the Blue Jays brought back Kevin Kiermaier—not as a center fielder, but as a special assistant in the front office.
Kiermaier, 34, announced his retirement after winning the 2024 World Series with the Dodgers, capping off an impressive 12-year career. While he was a solid hitter, his true legacy lies in his defense. With four Gold Gloves, a Platinum Glove, and an MLB-best 175 Defensive Runs Saved among center fielders since 2003, Kiermaier’s impact on the field was undeniable. Now, he’ll be using that expertise to help elevate Toronto’s already strong defensive outfield.
Daulton Varsho, who played alongside Kiermaier in 2023, is coming off his first Gold Glove season, and Myles Straw, another elite defender, was added via trade. With George Springer and new signing Anthony Santander patrolling the corners, the Blue Jays are building a formidable defensive unit. Kiermaier’s new role will focus on mentoring players at all levels, helping them refine their skills and take the team’s defense to the next level.
Toronto has been aggressive this offseason, adding stars like Scherzer, Santander, Jeff Hoffman, and trading for second baseman Andrés Giménez. Kiermaier reportedly had opportunities elsewhere, including with the Rays, but ultimately chose to return to Toronto, thanks to his strong relationships with Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro.
With Kiermaier’s defensive brilliance now influencing the team off the field, the Blue Jays could be shaping up as a serious championship contender.
