Red Sox Swap Minor League Pitchers in Trade with Tigers

Just hours after a 14-4 loss to the New York Yankees on Saturday, the Boston Red Sox made a trade with the Detroit Tigers.

Boston acquired right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter, sending right-hander CJ Weins to Detroit, according to a team release.

Weins, a 2023 sixth-round draft pick, had been in the Red Sox system for just under a year. He reached Low-A Salem and faced 29 batters in 19 appearances in 2024, having played college ball at South Carolina and Western Kentucky.

Wingenter, 30, returned to MLB with the Tigers after a four-year hiatus from the big leagues. He posted a 3.31 ERA in 26 appearances this season with Triple-A Toledo. The Red Sox are currently 8 1/2 games ahead of the Tigers in the American League Wild-Card standings. The two teams split a four-game series at Fenway Park earlier this season.
