Ex-Yankees pitcher who made MLB comeback last season signs with Twins

A former New York Yankees pitcher, who made a comeback to MLB last season after a 3 1/2-year hiatus due to injuries, has signed a minor league deal with the Minnesota Twins, signaling a continued pursuit of his major league dream.

Yankees take a flier on reliever Matt Bowman with 2022 in mind

Matt Bowman, who endured a lengthy recovery period and did not pitch at all during his hiatus, demonstrated enough promise with the New York Yankees organization last season to extend his baseball career. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported on Thursday that Bowman has inked a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins, earning an invitation to spring training. If he secures a spot in the majors, he stands to earn $925,000. Bowman’s journey back to baseball has been remarkable, marked by resilience and determination.

Despite having been a reliable reliever with a 4.13 ERA across 185 1/3 innings for the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds, Bowman’s last major league appearance was in 2019. Throughout his hiatus, he grappled with an elbow strain that led to Tommy John surgery, resulting in a two-season absence from the game. In 2021, he signed a two-year minor league deal with the Yankees and finally made his return to the majors in 2023 after being re-signed by the Yankees. Bowman’s remarkable journey included a span of 1,445 days between major league appearances.

During his time with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Bowman posted a 3.99 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and recorded 58 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings. He was recalled to the majors in September, where he pitched four innings, giving up four runs with three strikeouts.

Known for his sinker-sweeper pitching style, Bowman reached a top speed of 93.1 mph last season. A 13th-round pick by the New York Mets in 2012, Bowman, who attended Princeton, spent four seasons in the Mets organization before embarking on his journey back to the majors.
